The term Pilates took off in the early 2000’s. Joseph Pilates had been gone already since 1967. His wife, and students kept his work going in New York -but never trademarked the name. People started calling all movements that began with the term “naval to spine” Pilates. There are many good teachers that didn’t go through classical training, but you had a better chance of understanding the work if were taught by one of the masters who worked with Mr. Pilates himself.
Joseph Pilates called his method of fitness, “Contrology.” Contrology is the complete coordination of the body, mind and spirit. Through Contrology, you purposefully acquire complete control of your own body then, through proper repetition of its exercises, you gradually and progressively acquire that natural rhythm and coordination associated with mental and subconscious activities.
“Contrology is designed to give you supplesness, natural grace and skill that will be unmistakenly reflected in the way you walk, play and work. You will develop muscular power with corresponding endurance, ability to perform arduous duties, to play strenuous games, to walk, run, or travel for long distances without undue body fatigue or mental strain.” (excerpted from the book, “Return to Life Through Contrology” by Joseph Pilates)
